The Pouch Works

Pouches for Coffee

Roasted coffee needs a stand-up pouch with a one-way degassing valve and a resealable zip. Use a metallised foil or kraft-with-foil-liner structure — freshly roasted beans release carbon dioxide for up to two weeks, and the same barrier that vents that gas out has to keep oxygen and light from getting in.

The valve is not optional for fresh roast. Without one, a sealed pouch of beans roasted in the last fortnight will swell and can burst its seal; with one, gas escapes while air stays out. Ground coffee off-gasses faster than whole bean, so if you grind to order the valve matters even more.

Sizing follows fill weight rather than a nominal volume. A 250g retail bag of whole bean typically runs 130 × 225mm with a 70mm gusset; 1kg wholesale bags run around 200 × 320mm. Speciality roasters often add a hang hole for peg display and a tear notch above the zip so the first open does not need scissors.

On finish, kraft plus a foil liner is the established speciality look and still delivers full barrier. Straight metallic foil gives stronger shelf presence under supermarket lighting. Both print well; kraft shifts colours warm, so check that against your brand palette before committing.

Pouches for Coffee — common questions

Do I need a valve on coffee pouches?
Yes for freshly roasted coffee. Beans release carbon dioxide for around two weeks after roasting and a sealed pouch without a valve will swell and can split. If you are packing coffee that has already rested for several weeks, you can skip it.
What size pouch holds 250g of coffee?
Around 130 × 225mm with a 70mm bottom gusset holds 250g of whole bean comfortably. Ground coffee packs denser, so the same pouch takes a little more.
Kraft or foil for coffee?
Both work as long as there is a barrier liner. Kraft reads as speciality and small-batch; metallic foil stands out more under retail lighting and gives a marginally better barrier. The decision is usually brand-led rather than technical.
How long does coffee stay fresh in a printed pouch?
With a foil barrier, a valve and a good seal, roasted coffee typically holds quality for six to twelve months unopened. Once opened, the zip keeps it usable for a few weeks.
