Child Resistant Pouches
A child resistant pouch uses a specially engineered closure — usually a CR zip needing two simultaneous actions to open — so that young children cannot easily access the contents while adults still can. Child resistance is a property of the tested closure and pouch together, certified to a standard such as ISO 8317, not something added by printing a warning on the pack. Specify it at enquiry stage, because it changes the closure, the seal and the price.
How does a child resistant zip work?
A standard pouch zip opens with a single pull. A CR zip requires two things at once — typically pressing or pinching the slider while sliding it, or aligning and squeezing opposite points on the track. The combination of grip strength, coordination and sequence is what young children reliably cannot manage.
Because the mechanism is more complex, CR closures are physically bulkier than a standard zip, which affects the top area of the pouch and the space available at the head of your artwork. Plan the design around it rather than retrofitting.
Which products need child resistant packaging?
The requirement is driven by what is inside, not by the format. In the UK, packaging that must be child resistant generally covers products classified as hazardous under CLP, certain medicines, and products carrying specific supply regulations.
In practice we are asked for CR pouches most often for these categories:
- CBD edibles, oils and gummies
- Nicotine pouches and vaping consumables
- High-dose supplements, particularly gummies that resemble sweets
- Household and garden chemicals in refill packs
- Some veterinary and pet health products
Does a CR pouch have to be certified?
If your product legally requires child resistant packaging, the closure needs to be tested and certified against a recognised standard — ISO 8317 for reclosable packaging is the usual reference, and there are equivalent standards for other markets. Testing is done on the pack as a system, with real panels of children and adults.
This matters commercially: 'child resistant style' is not the same as certified. If you are relying on child resistance for compliance, ask for the certification documentation for the specific closure and structure being supplied, and keep it on file. We will tell you plainly which of the two you are buying.
Child resistance is also separate from senior-friendliness. The standards test both — a closure that adults over 50 cannot open fails, however safe it is.
What it changes about your spec
Expect a higher unit cost than the same pouch with a standard zip: the closure component costs more, and applying it is a slower operation. Expect slightly tighter dimensional options too, since the closure has to sit within a workable head area.
Everything else stays the same. Barrier structure, finish and print are unaffected — you can have a CR closure on a foil laminate or a matte white pouch, printed digitally, at our standard 100-unit minimum.
Tell us at enquiry stage that you need child resistance and what the product is. Retro-fitting it after a quote usually means requoting from the start.

Are child resistant pouches a legal requirement?
It depends on the product. Packaging for substances classified as hazardous under CLP, certain medicines, and some regulated categories must be child resistant. Many brands in CBD and nicotine also adopt it voluntarily as a duty-of-care measure.
