Metallic Foil Pouches
Foil pouches carry a thin metallised or aluminium layer inside the laminate. That layer is the highest-performing barrier available in flexible packaging: it blocks oxygen, moisture, light and aroma transfer more completely than any paper or clear film structure, which is why it is the default for coffee, dried botanicals and anything with a long required shelf life.
It also changes how the pack looks. Ink over a metallised base picks up a reflective quality, so areas left unprinted read as bright silver and colours printed over them shift toward metallic. Used deliberately — a silver logo on a flat colour field, or a matte overlay with gloss detail — it gives a premium shelf effect that no matte substrate reproduces. Used carelessly, it makes flat artwork look busy.

Metallic Foil Pouches — common questions
- Is a metallic pouch the same as foil blocking?
- No. A metallic pouch has a metallised layer through the whole laminate. Foil blocking is a separate finishing process that stamps metallic detail onto specific areas of an otherwise non-metallic pack. Both are available; they cost differently and look different.
- Can I get a matte metallic finish?
- Yes. A matte overlacquer knocks back the shine while keeping the barrier, and you can leave selected areas gloss for contrast. It is one of the more effective premium finishes available.
- Are foil pouches recyclable?
- Generally not through UK kerbside collection, because the metallised layer makes them a mixed-material laminate. If recyclability outranks shelf life for your product, look at a mono-material or paper-based structure instead and we will explain the trade-off.
- Does foil cost more than kraft or matte white?
- Usually a little more per unit, though the gap narrows at higher quantities. For products where a shorter shelf life means write-offs, the barrier normally pays for itself.
